Today, Governor General Julie Payette resigned.
The Governor General is the Commander in Chief of our Armed Forces and has an important constitutional role. Considering the problems with his last appointment and the minority Parliament, the Prime Minister should consult opposition parties and re-establish the Vice-Regal Appointments Committee. In 2012 Conservatives created a non-partisan appointment process to nominate Canada’s Governor General. Instead of using this committee, Justin Trudeau arrogantly snubbed the process and appointed his own candidate. The decision that Justin Trudeau made has backfired and instead of focusing on the issues that truly matter to Canadians, getting vaccines, creating jobs and rebuilding the economy – Canada is facing a constitutional crisis.
